December 21st, 2012

We celebrated our little bit of snow by making snowmen inspired by the book The Missing Mitten Mystery.  We also did a snowball greeting during morning meeting.

This week students measured the area of their feet using square tiles and pennies.  We collected the data and created two different graphs.

Math Centers

For math centers this week, students explored money.  Students are working on identifying coins, building amounts using different coins, and counting coins to determine different amounts.  Mr. Bouchard taught us a new app called Coins, that helps practice these skills.  At the Ipad center, students used three different apps to practice their subtraction skills.  At the BrightLink center, students played One Hundred Number Chart Game and Base Ten Blocks.  These games help with identifying, ordering, and building double and triple digit numbers.

Our Word Wall words this week were her, him, and when.

Enjoy your vacation!

Our Author's Celebration!

Our Author's Celebration was a huge success!  Thank you to all of the families who came in to hear the author's read their stories.

Last week we started learning and exploring different maps.  This is part of our community unit.  These students are creating maps of a room in their houses.  We have been talking about the different parts of a map such as, a title, key, labels, and compass rose.

Our Word Wall words this week were had, were, and what.

Week of December 3rd, 2012

Students have been working hard using their author brains this week.  Every student has finished editing and revising their Small Moment story, and now they are working on illustrating their final published copy.  We will be having an author's celebration this Thursday from 9:00-9:40.  Every student will get a chance to sit in the author's chair and read their story to the audience.  Families are invited to come hear these wonderful stories being read out loud!
Math Centers

At this center, students worked on their addition skills.  Students had three Investigations addition games to choose from.  Every student is working on using the strategy of counting on because it is the most efficient!
At this center, students played the game Fishy Addition.  Students had to create a fishy train by matching an equation to it's missing addend.

Students continue to be working hard at the Ipad center.  This week we kept working on the app Zoom.  This helps students with number identification up to the thousands!

Our marble jar is filling up!  Please remember to be reading at home 4 times for forty minutes.  The Reading Log has to come in on Thursday in order for students to be able to put a marble in the jar.  We are hoping to be able to get our new classroom book soon!

Our Word Wall words this week were there, like, and are.
