Week of October 26, 2015

In word study we have been working on adding the ending S to our words.  S can make a sound like in snake or a Z sound like in bugs.

Students are writing some amazing teaching books! They are writing great details and putting labels and arrows in their pictures.

We have been learning about how different communities make decisions.  Students wrote about how decisions were made in their family communities.  We also talked about how our our county makes decisions by voting.  We read the books Duck For President and Grace For President.  Students had to decide who they thought should be present and had to try convince their classmates to vote for either Duck or Grace.  Then we had an official vote.  Grace won the vote for president!

We did a lot of fun spooky activities today.  We started with a spider web greeting.
We played Ghost in the Graveyard.
We also did spooky word study and math jobs today. Our paws points celebration was having popcorn and apple juice while watching a spooky Magic School Bus about bats!

Week of October 19, 2015

We have had a busy week with a lot of visitors!  We learned a new app called pattern shapes.  Students were able to explore the app during math menu.  Everyone was given the challenge of building their own design.  They then had to exchange iPads with a friend and build their friend's design out of real pattern blocks.

Nurse Amy came to visit us again!  This time she taught us about taking care of our teeth.
Fire fighters came to visit us.  They are an important part of our Jericho community. Community is our new social studies unit.  The fire fighters taught us about fire safety.  They also taught us about their equipment and everyone got to go inside the fire truck!

We helped our school community this week!   We helped by making placemats for the harvest dinner.

We also helped harvest food and seeds from the garden.  We are making a school seed bank, so that we have seeds for our garden in the spring!

We made shape posters in math this week.  Students had to sort shapes and use labels on
 their posters.

In writing, we are continuing to work on our teaching books.  We are thinking about questions that our reader's might have.  This helps us add more detail to our writing.

In word study, we have been working on spelling words that have the -am and -an chunks in them.  Our word wall words for the week were from, have, do, and does.
