Word Study and Math

We have been using our word study time to review all of our spelling skills from the year.  One way we reviewed was by doing buddy quizzes on our whiteboards.

We are on our last math unit which is about 3D shapes.  Last week the class enjoyed matching 3D shapes with their footprints.

Editors At Work

We have become excellent editors in first grade!  Students worked independently to edit their writing pieces and then worked with a buddy to edit their favorite piece.  Students checked for punctuation, uppercase letters, and word wall words.

Plants, Plants, and More Plants

We started growing beans in bags with no soil!  They are currently our Star Seeds, since there are no more Star Students this year!
We are performing an experiment with our grass seeds.  We are seeing what happens when we grow a plant with light and a plant with no light.  Today we made scientific observations of our grass plants.

Don't forget that Tuesday will be Crazy Hair Day for the whole school!

Paws Points Celebration on Thursday

The class has voted to have a double celebration of pajamas and stuffed animals.  This will happen on Thursday (5-11-17).  Students are invited to wear their pajamas and bring in a stuffed animal, but they do not have to.  The stuff animal must be small enough to fit in a backpack.  Students may wear slippers but they should also have shoes for recess!

A New(ish) Writing Unit

Hello!
Before vacation we finished up our realistic fiction unit.  We are continuing on with the fiction theme, but students are now allowed a little more freedom with their ideas.  This is where the creativity and imagination come into play.  Students are loving coming up with imaginary characters, places, and problems.  We are still working on the same basics but with a new twist!  We will still be focusing on having important story elements and bringing our characters to life!

Students have been thinking a lot about word choice or as we call them "sparkly" words.  Today, I gave students a tool to keep in their folder with some suggestions of "sparkly" words.  It was very popular, and it was great seeing students using the tool to help with their word choice.  We also added to our classroom list of "sparkly" words today.

We're on TV!

The class asked that I post this on our blog.  Look for some familiar faces!
