Week of December 8 and December 15

During math, we have been working on writing and identifying numbers.  We practiced writing numbers up to 200!

Students have been playing a game called Missing Numbers.  This game helps with identifying and writing numbers up to 120.
We have also been working on deciding if equations are true or false and showing our thinking.  Students have worked on it as a whole class and in small groups.
We read Snowmen at Night and created our own snowmen to decorate the hallway!
Nurse Amy came in to teach us about dental health and calling 9-1-1.
We have been working so hard on our teaching books.  Students have started to add a table of contents to their books.

Squishy Circuits and S.T.E.A.M.

This week students began rotating through a week long S.T.E.A.M. learning opportunity, with Mr. Bouchard, our enrichment teacher.  S.T.E.A.M. is an acronym born out the Next Generation Science Standards.  It stands for the integration of science, technology, engineering, art andmathematics.  This innovative new part of the Enrichment Program will provide your child with an introduction to S.T.E.A.M. skills that will serve as a base for further projects in the Enrichment Room’s Maker Space.  Squishy circuits are an innovative way for children to learn about electricity and the flow of electricity in a complete circuit using conductive and nonconductive homemade playdough.  We are looking to encourage innovation and creativity through the engineering design process.

Please look for updated pictures of your child being creative through this hands-on learning process.

Week of December 1, 2014

We practiced our word wall words this week using fancy pens and Wikki sticks.
Students traced a buddies foot and then measured their own foot using tiles.  They counted the tiles and recorded their number on a sticky note. We worked as a class to order the numbers.

We are working on writing informational books.  Students are planning their ideas on their fingers, sketching across the three pages, and using their teacher voices to write about something they know a lot about.  We have been using mentor texts to get ideas for our own writing.  There has been a lot of great writing going on!

Week of November 17, 2014

We had Four Winds this week.  We learned all about erosion.  Thank you to our parent volunteers!

We love buddy reading!
Students have been working on creating their own maps this week.  The map could be of an imaginary or real place.  The map had to include a map key, title, and at least one label.
We started a new writing unit this week.  It is our informational writing unit.  Students are working on picking a topic they know a lot about.  They verbally plan their writing with a partner and then write down their ideas!  We are working on using teacher voices in our teaching books.

I hope everyone has a fun and restful vacation!

We have been talking about maps along with our unit on community. We created a map of our classroom and students worked independently to map their bedrooms.  We added titles, labels, and map keys to our maps.  We have also been discussing why people would use certain maps.

We have started working on subtraction during math time.  Here are two examples of marvelous math work.

This student used crossing out to show her thinking.

This student used counting backwards to show her thinking.

During word study we have been working on words that have an -am or -an chunk.

We now have 4 things to check for in our story problems.  We have added labels to our marvelous math work.
There is a lot of new work up on our Marvelous Math Wall.
This student has all four pieces in their work.  This student used counting as their strategy to solve the problem.
This student used counting on as their strategy.
We have been playing a game called Dot Additon during math this week.
Each student picked their favorite small moment piece.  They have been working on revising, editing, and adding color to their pieces.
We read the book Miss Rumphius and discussed how she helped her community.  Then we came up with our own list of ways to help our community.

Our word wall words this week were all and to.
