Week of May 19, 2014

We are working hard to publish our realistic fiction pieces.  Students are editing and adding color to their pictures.  We hope to have an Author's Celebration with Mrs. Baer's class!

We had so much fun on Garden Day!  I didn't know I had so many great gardeners in my class!

Week of May 12, 2014

We have been practicing adding and subtracting with double digit numbers!  We played 3 different games to help us practice our skills!

Our plants are growing fast!  Students wrote an observation and a prediction about their plant in their science journals.  We also planted 2 different containers of grass.  One of the containers is growing in the sun and the other is growing in the dark.  We made a prediction that the plant in the dark will not grow as fast or as much because we think plants need the sun to make their food.  We are waiting to see what happens to each of them!

Some students have finished writing their realistic fiction stories and are now editing their work using a checklist.

Next week we have whole school stuffed animal day on Tuesday, Garden Day on Thursday, and a Vermont Sympohny Orchestra performance on Friday!

Week of May 5, 2014

We learned two new math games this week.  The one being played in these pictures is Roll 10.  Students roll two dice, add them together, and build the equation out of unifix cubes.  The cubes are added in stacks of ten until they reach 100.  Students also played Tens Plus.  This game helps students to understand equivalent expressions.

We are working on our realistic fiction stories. Students are focusing on making sure that their stories have a beginning, middle, and end and that they use lots of details!

We have started growing bean plants in our window!  Each student is growing their own plant.  Students have started recording their observations in their science notebook and they are making predictions about what will happen next.

A couple seeds had started to sprout!

Our Word Wall words were word, this, and them.

We enjoyed our whole school walk and our trip the Flynn to see Stuart Little!  Happy Mother's Day weekend to all the moms out there!

Week of April 28, 2014

Students worked on telling time to the hour and half hour on the ipad.

They also played Fishy Addition and worked in their math binders.

Some students played two different 100 number chart games on ABCYA.
In math, we have started a new Check Your Work chart.  We will have another math celebration when we reach our goal.

We learned the app Wings today.  It requires students to move the ipad around to fly their bird into the correct answer.  The app becomes more challenging as you continue to play it.  This will be a choice during Math Menu next week.

In Word study, we have been working on spelling two syllable words.  This includes compound words. We have been using the strategy of clapping to help us identify the syllables.  Our Word Wall words were make and more.

We have started a new writing unit that focuses on realistic fiction.  We read Henry and Mudge as an example of realistic fiction.  This means it is a story that you made up but it could happen in real life.  We have been filling out our planning sheets that focus on identifying the characters, setting, problem, solution, and wrap up in your story.

Don't forget that we have our Wellness Walk and our trip to the Flynn to see Stuart Little next week!
